A word from our Judge …

Rhodesian Ridgebacks have always fascinated me and, although I have never actually owned one, I have been drawn towards them as a possible breed that I would like to have bred and shown.

Being the head of the Kennel Union for so many years, naturally, as this is our national dog, I have had to involve myself in its development as a breed.  This included rewriting of the breed standard some years ago, in conjunction with the real experts, thus I have come to know both the standard and the types arising from this activity.

In fact, during the many years that I have judged dogs (my records reveal that I have judged 631 R/R’s at various venues around the world) the highlights being the initial National Show in Moscow in 1996, followed by the Juniors at the World Show in Dortmund in 2003 and the National Show in Sweden in 2007.  All these and the normal classes around the world have extended my knowledge of the breed and my personal interpretation of the standard.

I believe the dog is very worthy of being owned and bred and that we should not allow people to change the standard unless it is absolutely necessary and is approved by the breeders.
